Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
FoodCorps proposes to have 150 AmeriCorps members who will connect children to healthy food in limited-resource public schools by teaching nutrition education, building and tending school gardens, and promoting locally grown food in cafeterias across Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa.
Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington D.C. At the end of the first program year, FoodCorps AmeriCorps members will be responsible for measurably improving children's preference for and behavior toward eating healthy foods, thereby overcoming a key barrier in addressing the nation's costly epidemic of childhood obesity and other diet-related diseases.
In addition, AmeriCorps members will leverage 4,500 volunteers who will be engaged in promoting healthy foods to children and supporting long-term, healthy changes to the school food environments that affect children's dietary behavior.
This program will focus on the CNCS focus area of healthy futures. The CNCS investment of $2,310,000 will be matched with $2,940,000 in private funding.
