Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
University of Northern Iowa's Center for Energy & Environmental Education empowers Iowans with skills, tools and inspiration to build sustainable & desirable communities. We, in partnership with key entities in the region, propose a community-based initiative to improve access to nutritious foods to vulnerable populations in 16 NE Iowa counties as well as Linn County area. This proposal addresses the Healthy Futures focus area of the CNCS.
We seek 8 VISTA members and one VISTA leader to build the capacity of a number of community organizations to:
- Develop opportunity farms to produce fresh fruits and veggies while creating employment opportunities.
- Incorporate fresh and local fruits and veggies into food bank's distribution system.
- Build capacity of the distribution system to handle fresh and local fruits and veggies.
- Improve access to land and gardening resources for recent refugees and immigrants.
- Further develop Greens to Go, a mobile produce stand serving many underserved neighborhoods.
- Leverage accomplishments to secure more resources and more health food initiatives in the region.
We envision this to be a 3-year evolving work, re-evaluated annually.
