Block Grant

Overview

Grant Description
The Department of Public Safety (DPS), Office of Criminal Justice Assistance (OCJA) serves as the state administrative agency (SAA) for Nevada's Edward Byrne Memorial Justice of Assistance Grant (JAG) funding from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs.

Nevada's JAG grant supports a wide variety of programs for state and local governments designed to improve law enforcement and facilitate criminal justice solutions to reduce violent crime and recidivism for safer Nevada communities.

The FY 2023 Byrne JAG program may be used for law enforcement, courts, prosecution, indigent defense, corrections and reentry programs, drug treatment and enforcement, planning and technology, crisis intervention, and system improvements for criminal justice with technology across the state. The JAG grant provides criminal justice organizations with additional personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, training, technical assistance, information systems, and criminal justice solutions.

Projects selected for JAG grant funding will have a high probability of improving the performance of the criminal justice system and increase Nevada's capacity to prevent and reduce violent crime, recidivism, human trafficking, disruption of drug and gang activity, illegal drug sales and distribution.

Nevada utilizes JAG grant funds for projects that address issues most critical to Nevada's criminal justice system around the state.

Subgrantees provide data-driven solutions to the identified problems. OCJA continues to coordinate with state and local stakeholders in determining needs, gaps and priorities. Projects may include safe policing for safe communities, multijurisdictional task forces to interrupt gang activity and violent crime, drug market interdiction, technology initiatives to improve communications, training or operations, law enforcement mental health and wellness, problem-solving courts, reentry programs, gunfire detection technology, evidence-informed practices and innovative projects to name a few.
