Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
The Plantation Police Department (PPD) was established in 1955 and is currently tasked with the responsibility of providing public safety services to the city of Plantation, Florida. The city is situated in western Broward County, is 20 miles north of Miami-Dade County, and is home to 93,000 residents, covering nearly 23 square miles.

The PPD places a special emphasis on community relations and enhancing both trust and transparency with the residents of Plantation. The Plantation Police Department is committed to the implementation of BWCS throughout the organization.

The PPD sees this opportunity as a way to foster improved public relations and perceptions of policing as a whole. The implementation of BWCS will consist of a fair and equitable open bid process, with demonstration opportunities for all applicable submitters.

Upon review of all submissions, the top two potential awardees will be entered into a 90-day pilot study to assess all aspects of each system. The pilot will include but is not limited to: functional operation of all hardware and equipment, training and access to product training on a continual basis, ease and applicability of data transfer from the cameras to a database for storage and retrieval, video retrieval, editing capability for support staff, integration with electronic control weapons (ECW) deployment and functionality, interoperability with surrounding jurisdictions, and evidence transfer with the Broward County State Attorneys Office 17th Judicial Circuit.

After the completion of the pilot study, the PPD will award the BWC project with approval from the City Council of Plantation. Immediately following the award, a scaled implementation and training of all sworn and affected non-sworn personnel will be implemented until the project has reached full implementation and delivery.

City Council and the public at large will be included throughout the implementation of the BWC program. Suspected outcomes include increased transparency, community engagement enhancement, greater accountability, and reduced cases of use of force.
