Overview
Grant Description
Description: This agreement provides funding to the Central Council Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska.
Specifically, the recipient will carry out activities to establish a foundational understanding of the Alaska-British Columbia (AK-B.C.) transboundary watershed water quality and overall ecosystem health by generating comprehensive data related to baseline and reference conditions, and documenting ecosystem health to inform decision-making and improve governance practices.
Activities: The activities include coordinating with tribal, First Nation, local, provincial, state, and federal representatives to create steering and technical committees; hire support staff; conduct regional knowledge exchanges (virtual and in-person); collecting and analyzing existing water quality data in Southeast Alaska; coordinating and sharing knowledge among entities conducting water quality monitoring within the AK-B.C. transboundary watersheds; facilitating technical training by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for Southeast Alaska tribes; reviewing current and historic monitoring efforts and historical data; attend and present at the annual Indigenous Transboundary Mining Conference; developing a database and protocol for exporting water quality data to the EPA Water Quality Exchange (WQX); and producing a comprehensive report on the state of the environmental health of the AK-B.C. transboundary watersheds.
Subrecipient: No subawards are included in this assistance agreement.
Outcomes: Anticipated deliverables include presentations and data summaries for sharing with tribal, state, local, and federal partners; an updated quality assurance project plan; baseline information on AK-B.C. watershed elements; project tracking platform; semi-annual reviews and reports on progress.
Expected outcomes include improved Indigenous engagement and data coordination; improved understanding of water quality and ecosystem health in the AK-B.C. watersheds; improved understanding of AK-B.C. watershed extent, condition, and performance; and increased understanding of challenges and opportunities to support comprehensive transboundary watershed monitoring and governance.
The intended beneficiaries include the residents of and visitors to Southeast Alaska.
