Description: The agreement provides funding under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) to the Alief Independent School District (AISD). Specifically, the recipient will replace 20 Class 7) diesel school buses with 20 Class zero emissions (ZE) -Class 7+ electric school buses and direct current (DC) fast charging infrastructure. The transportation department will incorporate respective training modules for staff, drivers, and school bus technicians.

Training will consist of a mixture of online and hands-on training. Alief ISD transportation trainers will receive a Trainer of Trainers training by the electric bus provider. Alief Independent School District (AISD) plans to assign electric buses to three-tier routes strategically located within the district's geographic location. These specific routes represent areas of high traffic located next to housing developments; therefore, using electric buses would reduce harmful emissions and mitigate noise levels within the surrounding areas.

By replacing 20 diesel-operated buses, the district anticipates emissions reductions of 10 tons over the lifetime of the buses and the improvement of air quality for our students, staff, and community. This project will allow the Alief community to benefit from improved air quality; therefore, leading to better health in a cleaner environment. In addition, the district anticipates that driver behavior will be altered significantly by creating an awareness to optimize the efficiency of the electric buses and eliminating the need for idling.

The transportation department will incorporate respective training modules for staff, drivers, and school bus technicians. Training will consist of a mixture of online and hands-on training. Alief ISD transportation trainers will receive a Trainer of Trainers training by the electric bus provider. By using the Trainer of Trainer model, Alief ISD trainers will then turn around and train 60 bus drivers. School bus technicians will receive respective training and certification from an authorized school bus dealer to maintain and provide the required maintenance on the new electric buses.

School bus technicians will receive hands-on training by the electric bus provider at their facility. The training will consist of two eight-hour days on-site at the bus provider. By providing additional training for our technicians, the district will be creating and establishing a workforce training program and increasing the availability of certified technicians who can service electric buses and ensure the efficiency of the electric vehicle.

Community engagement activities to ensure meaningful participation with respect to the design, planning, and performance of the project Alief Independent School District will conduct a district and community survey and will present at the Alief Super Neighborhood Association to ensure that all stakeholders are provided with opportunities for meaningful participation. Community engagement advancement and increased public awareness of Clean School Bus (CSB) project and results, and an increased understanding of the environmental or economic effectiveness of the implemented technology.
