Overview
Grant Description
Description: This action approves an award in the amount of $800,000 to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality to conduct eligible assessment-related activities as authorized by CERLCA 128(a) in the state of Mississippi. The goals of this funding are to provide financial support for the elements of an effective state or tribal response program, as specified in CERCLA Section 128, and to ensure that states and tribes maintain a public record of sites included in their programs.
Brownfields are real property, the expansion, development, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Activities to be performed include inventory, characterize, assess, conduct cleanup planning of brownfield sites throughout the state of Mississippi, and community involvement related activities.
The recipient will expand public education and outreach of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality Voluntary Cleanup Program to underserved communities, assess over 30 sites through the State Targeted Brownfield Assessment Program, and oversee the cleanup of sites.

- Subrecipient: Issue around $200,000 in sub-awards annually to communities in need (as funding allows).
