Grant Description
Description: The agreement provides funding under the Inflation Reduction Act to Minneapolis Public Schools to replace in-use, non-zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles with new zero-emission vehicles to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in EPA Region 5.
The recipient will replace 25 eligible vehicles with comparable, eligible zero-emission vehicles under the School Bus Sub-Program, resulting in cleaner air and improved health for the communities in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Activities: The activities include replacing eligible internal combustion engine Class 7 vehicles with eligible zero-emission vehicles; purchasing, installing, operating, and maintaining charging equipment to maintain the new zero-emission vehicles; and providing workforce development and training to support the maintenance, charging, and operation of the new zero-emission vehicles.
Minneapolis Public Schools currently contracts with Metropolitan Transportation Network, and transports hundreds of students to school on behalf of Minneapolis Public Schools.
Metropolitan Transportation Network directly owns the school buses that will be replaced through this grant project.
Subrecipient: Minneapolis Public Schools will administer awarded funding as a subaward relationship to Metropolitan Transportation Network, who will be responsible for disposing a total of 25 Class 7 diesel school buses and replacing them with 25 Class 7 zero-emission, battery electric school buses.
In addition to the electric school buses, Metropolitan Transportation Network will also deploy 25 direct current fast charging station units, and perform the necessary charging infrastructure work to accommodate the direct current fast charging stations units.
Outcomes: The anticipated deliverables include replacing 25 internal combustion buses with 25 electric Type C school buses, installing 25 direct current fast charging electric vehicle charging stations, providing 32 hours of training to 282 individuals of contractor and applicant staff including 203 drivers, 10 mechanics, 1 foreman, 1 shop manager, 2 maintenance staff, and approximately 55 drivers from Minneapolis Public Schools and 10 mechanics from Minneapolis Public Schools specifically.
The expected outcomes include reduced greenhouse gas emissions, participation from internal workforce and external stakeholders in a training program, increased awareness of sustainable transportation, community acceptance and enthusiasm, and cost savings.
