Overview
Grant Description
Description: The purpose of this award is to provide funding under the Inflation Reduction Act to Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority.
Specifically, the recipient will improve air quality and reduce pollution in Michigan through the acquisition of battery electric mobile equipment, vehicles, vessels, charging equipment, related infrastructure, and solar arrays to initiate the transition to a zero-emission future for the Port of Detroit and the nearby Livernois Intermodal.
Activities: The activities include the acquisition of a variety of equipment: 4 heavy electric forklifts, 2 medium forklifts, 6 light electric forklifts, 1 boom lift, 1 gator, 2 rail car movers, 1 mobile gantry crane, 2 patrol boats, and 8 outboard motors.
Additionally, DWCPA will acquire charging equipment for the electric vehicles and install solar and electrical upgrades where needed.
To encourage participation, DWCPA will organize community engagement events with the local community and stakeholders.
DWCPA will also prioritize workforce engagement and development as a part of this project.
Subrecipient: Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision will receive $534,578 in funding to inform the local community and workforce of the upcoming development plans.
This funding will be entirely provided by local match funding from partners.
Michigan Clean Cities will receive $267,289 in federal funds to help Michigan-based companies meet their goals in adopting clean transportation solutions.
They will provide technical advisory services to the Port Authority and to each of the project partners and small fleet award recipients on the dry port application throughout design and implementation.
This includes developing specifications for equipment and charging infrastructure, supporting bid evaluation, and assisting with deployment.
Outcomes: The anticipated deliverables include receiving the aforementioned equipment and installing solar and electrical upgrades, community engagement events, and an informational workforce guidebook.
The expected outcomes include improved ambient air quality, reductions in mobile source pollution, reductions in fuel used annually, establishment of charging/fueling infrastructure to accommodate future deployment of zero-emission technologies, and the successful current and future workforce training.
