This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) represents the continuation of an NCI program to facilitate the transition of investigators in mentored, non-independent cancer research positions to independent faculty cancer research positions. This goal is achieved by providing protected time through salary and research support for the initial 3 years of the first independent tenure-track faculty position, or its equivalent, beginning at the time when the candidate starts a tenure-track faculty position.

Grant Details
The NCI Transition Career Development Award (K22) provides up to 3 years of support for candidates proposing research in which leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary clinical trial is optional. The award aims to enable the investigator to establish a productive independent cancer research program and generate preliminary data for a subsequent R01 or equivalent grant application submission. The award is intended for doctoral-level investigators pursuing careers in all fields of cancer research who have had at least 2 years of postdoctoral cancer research training but no more than a total of 8 years of mentored, non-independent training experience after the terminal research doctorate or clinical degree.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, federal agencies, and other entities. Candidates must have at least 2 years of postdoctoral cancer research training but no more than a total of 8 years of mentored, non-independent training experience after the terminal research doctorate or clinical degree. They must also commit a minimum of 75% of full-time professional effort to their program of career development.

Period of Performance
The total project period may not exceed 3 years.

Grant Value
NCI will provide up to $100,000 per year toward the salary of the career award recipient plus fringe benefits. Additionally, NCI will provide up to $50,000 per year toward the research development costs of the award recipient. Indirect Costs (F&A Costs) are reimbursed at 8% of modified total direct costs.
