Description

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites U01 applications for the continuation of the consortium to study Chronic Pancreatitis, Diabetes and Pancreatic Cancer (CPDPC) to conduct and complete ongoing studies on chronic pancreatitis (CP) and factors that increase the risk of pancreatic cancer in patients (children and adults) with CP, pancreatogenic (type 3c) diabetes (T3cDM) and in patients with newly diagnosed diabetes. The CPDPC is composed of several Clinical Centers (CC) and one Coordination and Data Management Center (CDMC). The Consortium since its establishment in Fall 2015 has conducted longitudinal clinical studies with comprehensive epidemiological and biological characterization of patients with CP (including those with Acute Recurrent Pancreatitis, ARP) to gain insight into the pathophysiology of chronic pancreatitis and its sequela: chronic pain, pancreatic insufficiency, T3cDM and the diabetes/pancreatic cancer association. The consortium has also undertaken studies on the development of pancreatic cancer in newly diagnosed diabetic patients. Applications for the Consortium Coordination and Data Management Center (CDMC) are being solicited via RFA-DK-25-018 "Consortium for the Study of Chronic Pancreatitis, Diabetes and Pancreatic Cancer Coordination and Data Coordinating Center (CPDPC-CDMC) (U01 Clinical Trial Optional)". To effectively contribute to the ongoing CPDPC clinical studies, each CC applicant should include researchers and clinicians with multi-disciplinary expertise to match the objectives of the CPDPC (see https://cpdpc.mdanderson.org/clinicalstudies.html). Research CCs will be expected to share results freely within Consortium and to develop trans-Consortium collaborative projects that make use of the combined expertise and technological capabilities present in all of the CCs.
Background
The Chronic Pancreatitis Clinical Research Consortium (CPCRC) is a continuation of the consortium established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in Fall 2015.

The consortium aims to study Chronic Pancreatitis, Diabetes, and Pancreatic Cancer (CPDPC) through longitudinal clinical studies that provide comprehensive epidemiological and biological characterization of patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP).

The goal is to gain insights into the pathophysiology of CP, its complications, and its association with pancreatic cancer. The CPCRC will focus on both adult and pediatric populations, expanding on previous research objectives.

Grant Details
The grant invites U01 applications from clinical centers (CCs) to contribute to ongoing studies on chronic pancreatitis. Each CC applicant should include researchers with multi-disciplinary expertise aligned with the objectives of the CPDPC.

CCs are expected to share results within the consortium and develop collaborative projects utilizing combined expertise. Key research objectives include:
1) Characterizing and following patients with CP and Acute Recurrent Pancreatitis (ARP);
2) Developing biomarkers for disease progression;
3) Evaluating genetic risk factors;
4) Proposing clinical trials for treatment efficacy;
5) Establishing non-invasive methods for disease detection;
6) Investigating microbiome alterations in pancreatitis;
7) Implementing innovative follow-up methods for pediatric patients transitioning to adulthood.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, public/state controlled institutions, private institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, local/state governments, tribal governments, federal agencies, and other organizations.

Foreign organizations are not eligible to apply. Applicants must demonstrate multi-disciplinary expertise relevant to chronic pancreatitis research.

Period of Performance
The maximum project period is five years.

Grant Value
NIDDK intends to commit $6.5 million in FY 2025 to fund up to six Clinical Centers under this RFA. Application budgets are limited to $400,000 per year in direct costs.

Place of Performance
The specific geographic locations for performance will be determined by the locations of the awarded Clinical Centers.
