The goal of the FY 2023 Team Nutrition Grant is to facilitate the adoption of healthy eating patterns by school-aged children (grades Pre-K through 12) and their families through the coordination and implementation of MyPlate nutrition education connected to the nutritious meals and snacks offered through USDA Child Nutrition Programs.

Objectives

  • Increase the consumption of nutritious foods and beverages offered through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), School Breakfast Program (SBP) and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) At-Risk Afterschool Meals and Outside School Hours Care Centers (OSHCC) via high-quality MyPlate nutrition education.
  • Increase awareness of the MyPlate symbol and accompanying MyPlate nutrition education tools, resources, and messages. Increase awareness of the nutritional contributions of meals and snacks offered to students from parents/caregivers, school coaches and athletic trainers, school nurses, afterschool program operators, and Pre-K-12 teachers.
  • Improve equity by increasing the number of students from historically underserved and marginalized populations who are reached by nutrition education resources, including resources and recipes that are culturally appropriate and/or in the preferred language of the students and their families.
  • Increase school community engagement in the development, implementation, and assessment of the Local School Wellness Policy (LWP).
Background
The goal of the FY 2023 Team Nutrition Grant is to facilitate the adoption of healthy eating patterns by school-aged children (grades Pre-K through 12) and their families through the coordination and implementation of MyPlate nutrition education connected to the nutritious meals and snacks offered through USDA Child Nutrition Programs. The grant aims to support nutrition education in the USDA FNS Child Nutrition Programs, including the NSLP, School Breakfast Program (SBP), and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). It also aligns with the Biden-Harris Administration National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, emphasizing expanding nutrition education for children and adolescents.

Grant Details
The grant will support activities such as facilitating connections between nutrition education activities for school-aged children and school meals, establishing and maintaining coalitions for coordinating MyPlate nutrition messages, engaging students in developing strategies to increase consumption of nutritious foods at school meals, conducting social marketing campaigns to increase awareness of the nutritional quality of school meals, developing culturally appropriate nutrition education resources, improving equity by reaching historically underserved populations with nutrition education resources, and increasing school community engagement in the development, implementation, and assessment of Local School Wellness Policies.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include State agencies that administer the NSLP, CACFP At-Risk Afterschool Meals Component and/or OSHCC, SFAs (only in cases where neither the State NSLP or State CACFP agency chose to apply), tribal organizations, non-profit organizations with expertise in MyPlate nutrition education for children, and land-grant colleges and universities.

Period of Performance
The anticipated period of performance is 3 years from September 15, 2023, to September 30, 2026.

Grant Value
$10,000,000.00 is expected to be awarded with anticipated individual grant awards ranging from $500,000.00 to $1,000,000.00.

Place of Performance
The grant activities will be performed nationwide in schools participating in the NSLP, SBP, and CACFP At-Risk Afterschool Meals and OSHCC.
