Recipients will strengthen Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID)/Sudden Death in the Young (SDY) surveillance by following the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention (NCFRP) protocols and by collaborating with death investigation systems. Required activities: identify all SUID/SDY cases, compile case information, conduct multidisciplinary case reviews, categorize cases using established criteria, improve data quality/timeliness, disseminate data for prevention, and identify risk factors. Applicants must choose one of the following SUID Core Components (birth to 1 year of age): 1) Statewide SUID surveillance 2) SUID surveillance in any/multiple forensic jurisdiction(s) Applicants can also choose one of the following SDY Optional Expanded Components (1 year to at least 17): 1) Statewide SDY surveillance (only available with core component 1) 2) SDY surveillance in any/multiple forensic jurisdiction(s) (if core component 2 selected, then jurisdictions must correspond) Additional funds will be awarded for SDY optional expanded component. Applicants of the SDY optional expanded component must demonstrate that they have the necessary collaborations outlined in this funding announcement. Project period outcomes: complete, comprehensive, population-based SUID/SDY surveillance dataset; category-specific SUID/SDY incidence; and surveillance data use to inform prevention and health promotion strategies: to improve policies and practices of systems serving families; to increase community awareness; and to increase use of standardized case investigation practices.
