Description

The purpose of this NOFO is to support the NIGMS Human Genetic Cell Repository (HGCR). The repository will maintain the current collection of cell cultures and DNA samples and will acquire, characterize, and expand high-quality cell samples and distribute cell lines and extracted DNA to qualified biomedical researchers.
Background
The NIGMS Human Genetic Cell Repository (HGCR) is intended to fund a single award to the Coriell Institute for Medical Research. The repository will maintain the current collection of cell cultures and DNA samples and acquire, characterize, and expand high-quality cell samples. It will also distribute cell lines and extracted DNA to qualified biomedical researchers. The repository currently contains more than 11,900 cell lines, primarily fibroblasts and transformed lymphoblasts, over 5,900 DNA samples, and over 85 iPSC lines. Repository samples represent a variety of disease states, chromosomal abnormalities, apparently healthy individuals, and many distinct human populations.

Grant Details
The work to be supported by this NOFO includes maintaining and distributing the cell lines currently in the repository's collection, acquiring new cell samples, establishing and characterizing permanent cell lines from these samples, maintaining the current stock of DNA samples, providing additional genetic services, and distributing other reagents as determined by the recipient and NIGMS staff. The recipient is also expected to enhance and maintain a comprehensive computerized database containing detailed information on every cell line and DNA sample. Additionally, they should provide a user-friendly and web-accessible catalog. The recipient should also engage with the global biobanking community to provide guidance on biobanking best practices, ensure that distributed samples have appropriate donor consent for use in research, and develop sustainability planning to assure long-term access of the resources to the biomedical research community.

Eligibility Requirements
Only one application per institution is allowed for this single source funding opportunity. Only the Coriell Institute for Medical Research is eligible to apply for this grant.

Period of Performance
The maximum project period is 5 years.

Grant Value
NIGMS expects to commit a maximum of $1.75 million total costs per year by funding one award. Application budgets are limited to $1.75 million total costs per year from NIH plus an estimated cost-recovery which should cover an increasing amount of the total costs across the 5-year period.
