Description

Research funded by this initiative will examine the effects of radiation exposure on the immune system and explore possible treatments for radiation-induced immune dysfunction. Research gaps exist in understanding the mechanisms of injury and repair with regard to radiation-induced immune system dysfunction, and these gaps must be addressed to better develop MCMs for radiation exposure. Through this initiative, the NIAID Radiation and Nuclear Countermeasures Program (RNCP) will support development of animal models for immune-targeted radiation injuries, studies to better understand radiation impacts on the immune system (including immune system-mediated multi-organ injury), identification of immune-specific pathways targeted by radiation, as well as biomarkers of exposure and mitigators/treatments that target immune-related radiation response pathways.
