Description

The DOE SC program in Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) hereby announces its interest in receiving new and renewal applications in Quantum Information Science (QIS). Responsive applications will propose research that could have a transformative impact on FES mission areas including Fusion Science and Technology and Plasma Science and Technology and / or advance QIS development enabled by FES-supported science. While fully recognizing the interdisciplinary and crosscutting nature of QIS, responsive applications will focus on areas consistent with the unique role of FES in this rapidly developing field. More specific information about responsive areas is included in the supplementary information section below.

Background
The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) in Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) is interested in receiving new and renewal applications in Quantum Information Science (QIS). The responsive applications will propose research that could have a transformative impact on FES mission areas, including Fusion Science and Technology and Plasma Science and Technology, and/or advance QIS development enabled by FES-supported science. The FES mission is to expand the fundamental understanding of matter at very high temperatures and densities and to build the scientific foundation needed to develop a fusion energy source. This is accomplished through the study of plasma, the fourth state of matter, and how it interacts with its surroundings across wide ranges of temperature and density; developing advanced diagnostics to make detailed measurements of its properties and dynamics; and creating theoretical and computational models to resolve essential physics principles.

Grant Details
The FOA is for Quantum Information Science Research for Fusion Energy Sciences. The FOA anticipates awarding grants and National Laboratory authorizations under this opportunity. The total funding available is $12 million in current and future fiscal year funds. The award size will depend on the number of meritorious applications and the availability of appropriated funds, with a ceiling of $800,000 per year and a floor of $50,000 per year. DOE anticipates making awards with a project period of two or three years. Applications may be submitted through Grants.gov.

Eligibility Requirements
All types of domestic applicants are eligible to apply, except nonprofit organizations described in section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 that engaged in lobbying activities after December 31, 1995.
