Description

The purpose of this grant program is to support potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) research programs that focus on varietal development and testing and potato varieties for commercial production. As used herein, varietal development and testing is research using conventional breeding and/or biotechnological genetics to develop improved potato varieties. Aspects of evaluation, screening and testing must support variety development.

Background
The Potato Breeding Research Program, authorized under Section 2(c)(1)(B) of the Competitive, Special, and Facilities Research Grant Act, aims to support research that facilitates breakthroughs in food and agricultural sciences critical to the United States.

The program is administered by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the USDA, focusing on developing superior potato varieties through integrated research and extension efforts. The goal is to address significant challenges faced by the U.S. potato industry by promoting excellence in research and fostering collaboration among various stakeholders.

Grant Details
The Potato Breeding Research program will fund two-year projects aimed at developing and releasing new potato varieties with high commercial value. Key tasks include:
1. Developing superior performing varieties resistant to pests and diseases such as potato virus Y and late blight;
2. Incorporating traits for improved water and nutrient use efficiency;
3. Identifying desirable yield and quality traits for new varieties;
4. Developing high throughput methods for rapid trait selection.

Successful proposals must demonstrate integration of research and extension objectives, stakeholder engagement, and a clear plan for data management.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include State agricultural experiment stations, land-grant colleges and universities, research foundations established by land-grant colleges, colleges receiving funds under the McIntire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Act, and accredited veterinary schools.

Applicants may subcontract to non-eligible organizations if necessary for project execution.

Period of Performance
The grant will be performed over a two-year period starting from FY 2025.

Grant Value
The total anticipated funding for the Potato Breeding Research Program in FY 2025 is approximately $3,707,255, with individual awards ranging from $500,000 to $1,500,000 per year.

Place of Performance
