Pilot Studies of Biological, Behavioral and Social Mechanisms Contributing to HIV Pathogenesis Within the Mission of NIDDK (R21 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

Background
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites applications for innovative basic and translational pilot research projects within the mission of NIDDK that are aligned with NIH HIV/AIDS research priorities. These priorities were most recently outlined by the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR) in NOT-20-018, UPDATE: NIH HIV/AIDS Research Priorities and Guidelines for Determining HIV/AIDS Funding, scientific priorities. Potential topics could address multiple overarching priorities. These include elucidation of unique pathophysiological mechanisms contributing to HIV comorbidities, coinfections, and complications (CCCs) affecting organs, tissues, and processes within the mission of the NIDDK.

Grant Details
This Notice of Funding Opportunity seeks exploratory and developmental projects within the mission of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) that address NIH HIV/AIDS research priorities. NIDDK supports biomedical research diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic diseases; gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreatic diseases, nutritional disorders, and obesity; and kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits other than institutions of higher education, for-profit organizations, small businesses, local governments, state governments, county governments, city or township governments, special district governments, Indian/Native American tribal governments (federally recognized), Indian/Native American tribal governments (other than federally recognized), federal governments, U.S. territory or possession organizations such as independent school districts, public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities, native American tribal organizations (other than federally recognized tribal governments), faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations. Foreign organizations are not eligible to apply.

Period of Performance
The total project period may not exceed 2 years.

Grant Value
The combined budget for direct costs for the two-year project period may not exceed $275,000. No more than $200,000 may be requested in any single year.
