Background
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is offering the NIDA Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Program Award in Substance Use and Substance Use Disorder Research (K12 Clinical Trial Optional) to support intensive supervised research training and career development experiences for clinician scientists leading to research independence in the area of substance use and substance use disorder research. The program aims to encourage institutions to develop and/or sustain programs that support mentored research and career development experiences for clinician scientists.

Grant Details
The program encourages applications for institutional research career development (K12) programs that propose to support intensive, supervised research and career development experiences leading to research independence for clinician scientists (Scholars) conducting substance use and substance use disorder (SUD) research. The scholars are expected to be supported for 3-4 years on consecutive 12-month appointments, committing a minimum of 9 person months (equivalent to 75% of full-time professional effort) to conducting clinical research and career development activities associated with the proposed K12 program.
The program is designed to provide clinician scientists with mentoring, training, and research experiences necessary to conduct independent research related to substance use and SUDs. The program should include both didactic components and supervised research experiences designed to accommodate research candidates with varying levels of experience and at various stages of their career. The program is also expected to promote inclusive, safe, and supportive research environments.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, local governments, Indian/Native American Tribal Governments, U.S. Territory or Possession, Native American Tribal Organizations, faith-based or community-based organizations, eligible agencies of the Federal Government, as well as foreign organizations are not eligible to apply. Scholars must be citizens or noncitizen nationals of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of appointment. Each scholar must hold a doctorate and commit a minimum of 9 person months (equivalent to 75% of full-time professional effort) to conducting clinical research with the remaining effort devoted to activities related to the development of a successful research career.

Period of Performance
The project period duration may range from 4 to 5 years.

Grant Value
Direct costs are limited to $750,000 per year with exceptions requiring Institute approval. Scholars can request salaries up to $100,000 along with associated fringe benefits. NIDA will provide funds up to $50,000 annually per scholar for research-related costs such as consultants, supplies, equipment, technical personnel, travel, and statistical services.
