Description

This program is designed to assist Native American tribes in improving library services for their communities. Information needs and approaches to meeting them are evolving at an unprecedented pace in all communities, and to operate within this environment effectively for the benefit of their users, libraries must be able to both strengthen services and move quickly to adopt new and emerging technologies. Reflecting IMLS's agency-level goals of championing lifelong learning, strengthening community engagement, and advancing collections stewardship and access.
Background
The Native American Library Services Basic Grants program is designed to support the achievement of agency-level goals of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and to facilitate the delivery of significant results consistent with its federal authorizing legislation. The program aims to assist Native American tribes in improving library services for their communities, reflecting IMLS’s agency-level goals of championing lifelong learning, strengthening community engagement, and advancing collections stewardship and access.

Grant Details
The program aims to improve services for learning and accessing information in a variety of formats to support needs for education, workforce development, economic and business development, health information, critical thinking skills, digital literacy skills, and financial literacy and other types of literacy skills. It also seeks to enhance the skills of the current library workforce and leadership through training, continuing education, and opportunities for professional development. The program uses two performance measures as a basis for understanding how well the grant program is meeting its goals and how individual projects are being managed: effectiveness and timeliness.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for an award under this Native American Library Services Basic Grants Notice of Funding Opportunity, the organization must be a federally recognized Indian tribe offering library services to the community. Eligible applicants may submit only one application under this announcement. Applications involving partnerships or collaborations are welcome.

Period of Performance
Projects must begin on August 1, 2024, with an anticipated period of performance from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025. Project activities may be carried out for one year.
