Description

The Museums for America program supports museums of all sizes and disciplines to undertake projects that strengthen their ability to serve their public. Project activities may include exhibitions, educational or interpretive programs, digital learning resources, professional development, community debate and dialogue, audience-focused studies, and/or collections management, curation, care, and conservation.
Background
The Museums for America program supports museums of all sizes and disciplines to undertake projects that strengthen their ability to serve their public. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) aims to advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grantmaking, research, and policy development. The program is designed to support the achievement of agency-level goals related to lifelong learning, community engagement, and collections stewardship and access.

Grant Details
The Museums for America grant program supports museums in strategic, project-based efforts to serve the public through exhibitions, educational/interpretive programs, digital learning resources, professional development, community debate and dialogue, audience-focused studies, and/or collections management, curation, care, and conservation. Projects are expected to focus on a key goal identified in the institution’s strategic plan and generate measurable results that tie directly to the need or challenge addressed. The program uses four performance measures: effectiveness, efficiency, quality, and timeliness.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for an award under this Museums for America Notice of Funding Opportunity, the organization must be either a unit of State, local, or tribal government or a private nonprofit organization with tax-exempt status under the Internal Revenue Code. The organization must be located in one of the 50 States of the United States of America or other specified territories. Eligible applicants include museums organized on a permanent basis for educational or cultural heritage purposes; public or private nonprofit agencies responsible for museum operation; and Native American tribal organizations meeting eligibility criteria.

Period of Performance
Projects must begin on September 1, 2022 and may be carried out for one to three years. The anticipated period of performance is September 1, 2022 - August 31, 2025.

Grant Value
$20,400,000 is expected to be awarded through this announcement with an anticipated number of awards at 115. Individual awards are expected to range from $5,000 to $250,000 with an average amount of funding per award experienced in previous years at $180,495.

Projects must be located within one of the specified geographic locations including the 50 States of the United States of America and various territories such as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
