Museum Grants for African American History and Culture (2023)

Background
The Museum Grants for African American History and Culture (AAHC) program is designed to build the capacity of African American museums and support the growth and development of museum professionals at African American museums. The program supports projects that nurture museum professionals, build institutional capacity, and increase access to museum and archival collections at African American museums and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
The program aligns with the mission of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grantmaking, research, and policy development.

Grant Details
The Museum Grants for African American History and Culture Program has two program goals: 1) Build the capacity of African American museums and their ability to serve their communities; 2) Support the growth and development of museum professionals at African American museums.
Each applicant should align their proposed project with one of these two goals and one or more of the associated objectives.
The program uses four performance measures as a basis for understanding how well the grant program is meeting its goals and how individual projects are being managed: effectiveness, efficiency, quality, and timeliness.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for an award under this Museum Grants for African American History and Culture Notice of Funding Opportunity, the organization must meet specific criteria including being a unit of State, local, or tribal government or a private, nonprofit organization with tax-exempt status under the Internal Revenue Code.
