Methyl Bromide Transition Program

ID: USDA-NIFA-ICGP-008881 • Type: Posted

Description

The Methyl Bromide Transition Program (MBT) addresses the immediate needs and the costs of transition that have resulted from the phase-out of the pesticide methyl bromide. Methyl bromide has been a pest and disease control tactic critical to pest management systems for decades for soilborne and postharvest pests. The program focuses on integrated commercial-scale research on methyl bromide alternatives and associated extension activity that will foster the adoption of these solutions. Projects should cover a broad range of new methodologies, technologies, systems, and strategies for controlling economically important pests for which methyl bromide has been the only effective pest control option. Research projects must address commodities with critical issues and include a focused economic analysis of the cost of implementing the transition on a commercial scale.

Background
The Methyl Bromide Transition Program (MBT) addresses the immediate needs and the costs of transition that have resulted from the phase-out of the pesticide methyl bromide.

Grant Details
NIFA requests applications for the Methyl Bromide Transition (MBT) program for fiscal year (FY) 2022 to support the discovery and implementation of practical pest management alternatives for commodities and uses affected by the methyl bromide phase-out. In FY 2022, applications are sought for integrated projects and extension-only projects.

Integrated projects focus on research for new alternatives and extension to encourage adoption and implementation of methyl bromide alternatives. Extension-only projects increase levels of adoption and implementation of pest management strategies by producers and growers. The program seeks proposals that integrate research and extension activities or be extension-only, designed to provide transitional alternatives that address immediate needs resulting from the loss of availability of methyl bromide.

Eligibility Requirements
Applications may only be submitted by colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving agricultural colleges and universities (HSACU), and 1994 Land-Grant Institutions. Award recipients may subcontract to organizations not eligible to apply provided such organizations are necessary for the conduct of the project.

Period of Performance
The grant duration is approximately 24-36 months with a start date no later than September 1, 2022.

Grant Value
The amount available for grants in FY 2022 is approximately $1.9 million.
