Description

The primary purpose of the NIH Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Awards (K08) program is to prepare qualified individuals for careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. This program represents the continuation of a long-standing NIH program that provides support and "protected time" to individuals with a clinical doctoral degree for an intensive, supervised research career development experience in the fields of biomedical and behavioral research, including translational research.
Background
The NIH Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Awards (K08) program aims to prepare qualified individuals for careers that significantly impact the health-related research needs of the Nation. It provides support and 'protected time' to individuals with a clinical doctoral degree for an intensive, supervised research career development experience in biomedical and behavioral research, including translational research.

Grant Details
The K08 award provides salary and research support for a sustained period of 'protected time' (3-5 years) to support didactic study and/or mentored research for individuals with clinical doctoral degrees. The proposed project must be related to the programmatic interests of one or more participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs). The award may be used by candidates at different stages in their mentored career development, with varying levels of prior research training. The program supports basic science experimental studies involving humans, prospective basic science studies involving human participants, and independent clinical trials.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, federally recognized tribal governments, and certain other entities. Candidates must have a clinical doctoral degree or a PhD in clinical disciplines such as clinical psychology, nursing, or rehabilitation. They must commit a minimum of 75% of full-time professional effort to their career development. The applicant institution must have a strong record of research and career development activities and qualified faculty to serve as mentors in biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research.

Period of Performance
The total project period may not exceed 5 years. The earliest start date is June 12, 2024.

Grant Value
Award budgets include salary and other program-related expenses. Indirect Costs are reimbursed at 8% of modified total direct costs.
