Description

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites applications from eligible research institutions to seek funds to build new or renovate existing facilities to expand the breeding capacity and increase future production of NIH-supported specific pathogen free (SPF) non-human primate (NHP) colonies. These SPF NHP facilities must support research activities aligned with the NIH-established priorities for HIV/AIDS research. Any request must be justified by current and anticipated future research needs of SPF NHPs.
Background
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites applications from eligible research institutions to seek funds to build new or renovate existing facilities to expand the breeding capacity and increase future production of NIH-supported specific pathogen free (SPF) non-human primate (NHP) colonies. These SPF NHP facilities must support research activities aligned with the NIH-established priorities for HIV/AIDS research.

Grant Details
NIH recognizes NHPs serve as critical animal models for broad biomedical research including several HIV/AIDS research areas and the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the shortage of SPF NHPs. Through this NOFO, NIH intends to expand the support of NHP breeding resources to increase the output of NHP models substantively and cost-effectively and address the ongoing needs for HIV/AIDS research. The project, when completed, is expected to provide significant long-term cost-effective support for HIV/AIDS research, bringing the capacities and capabilities to a new level.

Eligibility Requirements
Only institutions with SPF NHP colonies currently supported by NIH are eligible to apply. The PD/PI should be a PhD-level scientist who possesses knowledge of the NHP breeding as well as NHP-related HIV/AIDS research field using SPF NHPs and has a vested interest in the success of the project.

Period of Performance
The total project period shall not exceed five years. Funds will be provided in a single award with up to a 60-month budget and project period.

Grant Value
Application budgets are not limited but need to reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. The allowed direct cost is $2,000,000 to $4,000,000.
