Purpose of Program: Through the Education Research and Development Center Program, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) funds Research and Development (R&D) centers to conduct a focused program of research that will contribute to solving a specific education problem and generate new knowledge in their topic area; provide national leadership, research training, capacity building, and outreach within their topic area; and conduct relatively rapid research and scholarship on supplemental questions that emerge within their topic area.

Background
The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) is issuing a funding opportunity through the National Center for Education Research (NCER) to support Research and Development (R&D) centers. The purpose of this program is to conduct focused research that addresses specific educational problems, generate new knowledge, and provide national leadership and outreach within the education sector.

Grant Details
The Education Research and Development Center Program will fund R&D centers to:

1. Conduct a focused program of research aimed at solving specific education problems.
2. Generate new knowledge in their topic area.
3. Provide national leadership, research training, capacity building, and outreach within their topic area.
4. Conduct rapid research on supplemental questions that arise within their topic area.

The program will consider applications addressing the following topics:
- Improving Gifted Education with an estimated total award of $5,000,000.
- Using Generative Artificial Intelligence to Improve Instruction in Postsecondary Education with an estimated total award range of $8,000,000 to $10,000,000.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include partnerships involving at least one institution of higher education and at least two State educational agencies capable of conducting rigorous research for the Improving Gifted Education topic. For the Generative Artificial Intelligence topic, entities that can conduct rigorous research are eligible to apply, including non-profit and for-profit organizations as well as public and private agencies.

Period of Performance
The maximum project period for both topics is five years.

Grant Value
The total value of the grant varies by topic: $5,000,000 for Improving Gifted Education; $8,000,000 to $10,000,000 for Using Generative Artificial Intelligence.

Place of Performance
The grant activities are expected to be performed in various locations as determined by the applicants but must comply with federal civil rights laws.

Eligible applicants include, but are not limited to, non-profit and for-profit organizations and public and private agencies and institutions, such as colleges and universities.
