Human Virome Characterization Centers (U54 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

ID: RFA-RM-23-019 • Type: Posted

Description

Posted: Sept. 13, 2023, 12:00 a.m. EDT
The RFA will solicit applications for the Human Virome Program under the NIH Common Fund to establish multicomponent Virome Centers that will focus on the identification and characterization of the human virome in longitudinal and diverse cohorts across several body sites and tissues. The multicore structure of each center will allow for specialized and broad expertise in isolating viruses (circulating, proviral, integrated forms) and a coordinated, and comprehensive research program for recruiting diverse participants, collecting and analyzing many types of biospecimens, standardizing and analyzing center data, and addressing ethical, social and legal implications of human virome research. The Centers will also work collaboratively across the program consortium of separately awarded investigative teams in the coordination and management of consortium policies and practices. Similar to other U54 initiatives, the virome centers have unique objectives and specific review criteria and core specifications outlined in the RFA, and currently, there are no existing study sections with the necessary expertise to review this complex program.

Background
The Human Virome Program is a Common Fund initiative under the NIH Office of Strategic Coordination. It aims to characterize the human virome, create tools, models, and methods for in-depth study of virome's variation in relation to host factors and its influence on health and disease. The program consists of four initiatives that will work synergistically to achieve its goals.

Grant Details
The Human Virome Characterization Centers (VCCs) will focus on identifying and characterizing the human virome in longitudinal and diverse cohorts across several body sites and tissues. The VCCs will utilize an adequate number of samples for each sub-initiative to have sufficient statistical power to test the study hypotheses and the significance of experimental findings.

They will collect, process, and analyze the virome and human fractions of each sample, determine relationships between the virome and other components of the host, categorize virus taxonomy, characterize newly identified viruses, and determine factors that influence virome composition and its host dynamics.

Each VCC will include five cores: Administrative, Biospecimen Collection, Biospecimen Analysis, Data Analysis & Submission, and Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI).

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must address all sub-sections described in the Research Strategy instructions. Projects must focus on characterizing the virome within the context of the human host using human biospecimens with diversity in gender, race, socio-economic status, geography, and other relevant diversity parameters.

Projects must also propose all required components of the VCC organization as described.

Period of Performance
The grant has an open date for submission on October 17, 2023. The earliest start date is November 17, 2023. The period of performance is from November 17, 2023 to July 2024.

Grant Value
The total value of the grant is not specified.
