Description

The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to support multi-component, multi-disciplinary projects that address scientific questions relevant to AIDS prophylactic vaccine discovery research. Extensive evaluation of vaccine concepts in non-human primate models may be included.
Background
The HIV Vaccine Research and Design (HIVRAD) Program aims to support multi-component, multi-disciplinary projects that address scientific questions relevant to AIDS prophylactic vaccine discovery research. The program is issued by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) under the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The goal is to develop a safe and effective HIV preventive vaccine to prevent new infections in neonates, infants, pre-adolescents, and young adults.

Grant Details
The grant supports projects that address hypotheses crucial to the design of an efficacious HIV/AIDS prophylactic vaccine. It includes preclinical evaluation of vaccine concepts in nonhuman primates and/or small animal models. The research will focus on approaches to elicit durable and broadly adaptive immunity against HIV and/or SIV, identifying correlates of vaccine-induced immune protection, HIV structural studies, improved animal model systems, approaches to improve the immunogenicity of HIV antigens, novel candidate vaccine design for addressing the heterogeneity of HIV, developing or improving vaccine vectors, determining how immune cells can be mobilized to relevant mucosal sites, and investigations into innate immunity to alter the outcome of infection.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, local governments, state governments, federal governments, U.S. Territory or Possession entities, foreign institutions and components of U.S. Organizations. Individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research as the Program Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s) are invited to work with their organization to develop an application for support.

Period of Performance
The maximum project period is 5 years.

Grant Value
NIH intends to fund an estimate of 1-2 awards corresponding to a total of $5.0M for fiscal year 2025. Application budgets are not expected to exceed $2,500,000 in direct costs per year.
