Description

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages joint applications for the Global Infectious Disease (GID) Research Training programs from U.S. and low- and middle-income country (LMIC) institutions. The application should propose a collaborative training program that will strengthen the capacity of a LMIC institution to conduct infectious disease research. FIC will support research-training programs that focus on major endemic or life-threatening emerging infectious diseases, neglected tropical diseases, infections that frequently occur as co-infections in HIV infected individuals or infections associated with non-communicable disease conditions of public health importance in LMICs. Training related to prevention, treatment or public health approaches to any technical area of basic, epidemiology, clinical, behavioral or social science health research may be supported. Research Training programs should incorporate didactic, mentored research and career development skills components to prepare individuals for careers that will have significant impact on the priority health research needs of LMICs. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) allows support of [trainees] as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial; or a separate ancillary clinical trial or proposing to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator, as part of their research and career development.
Background
The Global Infectious Disease Research Training Program (GID) aims to strengthen the capacity of low- and middle-income country (LMIC) institutions to conduct infectious disease research. This program focuses on major endemic or life-threatening emerging infectious diseases, neglected tropical diseases, infections frequently occurring as co-infections in HIV infected individuals, or infections associated with non-communicable disease conditions of public health importance in LMICs. The program encourages joint applications from U.S. and LMIC institutions to support collaborative training programs that incorporate didactic, mentored research, and career development skills components to prepare individuals for careers impacting the priority health research needs of LMICs.

Grant Details
The program aims to develop research training opportunities and professional development activities for a collaborative group of LMIC scientists and health research professionals at an LMIC institution to strengthen its capacity to conduct independent, sustainable infectious disease research. It provides mentored infectious disease research experience relevant to the health priorities of the LMIC trainees.
The program also aims to strengthen the capabilities of trainees at the proposed LMIC institution to lead, manage, and train others in infectious disease research. Each program should provide rigorous research training including advanced coursework, mentored research experience, and appropriate technical and professional skills' development. The program supports a maximum project period of 5 years with an annual budget limit of $230,000 for new awards and $276,000 for renewal awards (total direct costs).

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions such as public/state controlled institutions of higher education and private institutions of higher education. Foreign organizations are also eligible to apply if collaborating with a U.S. institution.
The applicant institution must have a strong and high-quality research program in the proposed area and demonstrate ongoing collaborations with a LMIC institution named in the application. Only individuals who are citizens of LMICs are eligible for research training support or other training activities.

Period of Performance
The open date for submission is July 06, 2024, with an expiration date of August 07, 2026.
The earliest start date is August 06, 2024.

Grant Value
Application budgets are limited to $230,000 per year for new awards and $276,000 per year for renewal awards (total direct costs). Awards may provide stipends as a subsistence allowance to help defray living expenses during research training.
The cost of tuition and fees at the rate in place at U.S. or foreign institutions can be supported.

Place of Performance
The proposed institutional infectious disease research training program may complement other ongoing research training and career development programs at the LMIC institution but must be clearly distinct from related programs.
