FY2022 - Historic Preservation Fund- Annual State Historic Preservation Office Grants

Background
The funding program supports the operation of State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs) in the 50 states, 5 territories, 3 Freely Associated States, and District of Columbia within allowable program areas described in the Historic Preservation Fund Grants Manual. The purposes of this program are to provide matching grants to States for the identification, evaluation, and protection of historic properties by such means as: survey, planning, technical assistance, physical preservation, Federal tax incentives available for historic properties, nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, distribution of funding to Certified Local Governments, and to assist Federal, State, and Local Government agencies, nonprofit organizations and private individuals in carrying out historic preservation activities. Awards under this program must comply with and support 54 USC 301 et seq. (commonly known as the National Historic Preservation Act).

Grant Details
The grant awards are determined by the NPS Apportionment Formula for State Historic Preservation Offices. The total estimated funding is $55,675,000 with expected award amounts ranging from $50,000 to $2,000,000. The anticipated award date is June 01, 2022. There are expected to be 59 awards under this program. Eligible applicants include state governments and certain nonprofit organizations as defined in the National Historic Preservation Act. The recipient must provide a cost match of a minimum of 40% of the total project cost from non-Federal sources. There are various other requirements and restrictions including federal reviews under other laws such as the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 (ARPA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include state governments as defined in the National Historic Preservation Act as amended. Further eligible applicants are defined in specific sections of the act. One nonprofit organization, Ohio History Connection, is eligible to apply serving as the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office.

Period of Performance
The anticipated award date is June 01, 2022 with most awards expected to be made prior to 09/01/2022.
