Description

In 1988, the National Park Service established the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Preservation grant program to document, preserve, and stabilize structures on HBCU campuses. The HBCU grant program exists to repair historic structures on campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places either individually or as contributing to a National Register or National Historic Landmark historic district. Projects must meet major program selection criteria and all work must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation.
Background

Grant Details
The FY2020 Public Law 116-94 provides $10 million for the HBCU Grant Program. The anticipated award date is August 10, 2021, with an expected number of awards being 24. The maximum award amount is $500,000, and the minimum award amount is $50,000. Eligible costs under this award include projects under eligible program areas as defined by the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), administrative costs necessary to complete and administer the grant requirements, rehabilitation of properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and other costs as determined eligible by the NPS in accordance with OMB circulars, NPS policies, and the Historic Preservation Fund Grants Manual.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include private institutions of higher education and public and State controlled institutions of higher education. All accredited HBCU institutions are eligible. Buildings or structures already listed in the National Register of Historic Places as of the published deadline for submitting grant applications are eligible for a grant award. They may be individually listed or as contributing to a National Register Historic District, or listed as National Historic Landmarks.
