The AFG Program provides financial assistance directly to eligible fire departments, nonaffiliated emergency medical service (EMS) organizations, and State Fire Training Academies (SFTAs) to equip and train emergency personnel to recognized standards, enhance operational efficiencies, foster interoperability, support community resilience, and enhance the safety of the public and emergency responders before, during, and after hazardous events.

Background
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program provides financial assistance directly to eligible fire departments, nonaffiliated emergency medical service (EMS) organizations, and State Fire Training Academies (SFTAs) to equip and train emergency personnel to recognized standards, enhance operational efficiencies, foster interoperability, support community resilience, and enhance the safety of the public and emergency responders before, during, and after hazardous events. The program is issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)/Grant Programs Directorate (GPD). The AFG Program is part of DHS's focus on enhancing the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire and fire-related hazards.

Grant Details
The AFG Program has awarded approximately $8.1 billion in grant funding to provide critically needed resources that equip and train emergency personnel to recognized standards, enhance operational efficiencies, foster interoperability, and support community resilience. The program aims to reduce deaths, injuries, and property damage by reducing the risks associated with fire-related hazards. It supports the goal to Strengthen Preparedness and Resilience as outlined in the DHS Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2020-2024.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include fire departments operating in any of the 50 states, nonaffiliated EMS organizations operating in any of the 50 states, and State Fire Training Academies operating in any of the 50 states. Additionally, non-federal airport and/or port authority fire or EMS organizations are eligible if they have a formally recognized arrangement with the local jurisdiction to provide fire suppression or emergency medical services on a first-due basis outside the confines of the airport or port facilities.

Period of Performance
The period of performance for the grant is 24 months. Extensions to the period of performance are allowed.

$324 million available funding for the NOFO with projected number of awards at 2,000.

Place of Performance
The specific geographic locations where the grant will be performed include all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and federally recognized Indian tribes or tribal organizations.
