Description

The AFG program provides direct financial assistance to fire departments, nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Service (EMS) organizations and State Fire Training Academies (SFTA) to equip and train emergency personnel in order to foster interoperability, strengthen community resilience, and enhance the safety of the public and emergency responders before, during, and after hazardous events.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program provides direct financial assistance to fire departments, nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Service (EMS) organizations and State Fire Training Academies (SFTA) to equip and train emergency personnel in order to foster interoperability, strengthen community resilience, and enhance the safety of the public and emergency responders before, during, and after hazardous events. The AFG Program has awarded approximately $7.7 billion in grant funding to provide critically needed resources that equip and train emergency personnel to recognized standards, enhance operational efficiencies, foster interoperability, and support community resilience.

Grant Details
The objectives of the AFG Program are to provide critically needed resources that equip and train emergency personnel to recognized standards, enhance operational efficiencies, foster interoperability, and support community resilience. The program has three activities: Operations and Safety; Vehicle Acquisition; and Regional Projects.

Eligible applicants include fire departments, nonaffiliated EMS organizations, and State Fire Training Academies. The program requires applicants to maintain aggregate expenditures relating to allowable activities at not less than 80 percent of the average amount of such expenditures in the two fiscal years prior to the fiscal year an AFG Program grant is awarded. Recipients are also required to make available non-federal funds in an amount equal to not less than 15 percent of the grant awarded.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include fire departments operating in any of the 50 states, nonaffiliated EMS organizations operating in any of the 50 states, as well as State Fire Training Academies operating in any of the 50 states.

Applicants must have a DUNS number from Dun & Bradstreet (D&B), an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service, an active System for Award Management (SAM) registration, and register in FEMA GO.

Period of Performance
The period of performance for the grant is 24 months with extensions allowed. The projected period of performance start date is May 1, 2022, and end date is April 30, 2024.

Grant Value
$414 million available funding for the NOFO with a projected number of awards at 2,500.

Place of Performance
The grant will be performed by fire departments, nonaffiliated EMS organizations, and State Fire Training Academies operating in any of the 50 states.
