Description

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) supports projects relevant to the NIGMS mission that focus solely on the development of technologies with potential to enable acquisition of biomedical knowledge. Projects should be justified in terms of technical innovation and utility of such technical innovation for impacting future biomedical research. Outcomes or products of the proposed project should significantly advance the current state of the art and be sufficiently characterized for application in addressing a broad range of biomedical research questions.
Background
The Focused Technology Research and Development (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) is a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) issued by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS).

The mission of NIGMS is to support basic research that enhances our understanding of biological processes, laying the groundwork for advancements in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. This NOFO aims to support projects that focus on the development of innovative technologies that can significantly advance biomedical research.

Grant Details
This NOFO supports projects that are relevant to the NIGMS mission and focus solely on developing technologies that enable the acquisition of biomedical knowledge.

Projects must demonstrate technical innovation and utility for impacting future biomedical research. The outcomes should advance the current state of the art and be characterized for application in addressing a broad range of biomedical research questions. Acceptable outcomes include laboratory instruments, algorithms, software, chemical reagents, and modified biological systems.

Applications should propose development of technologies with proof-of-concept but facing significant technical hurdles. Applications proposing tests of specific biological questions will be administratively withdrawn without review. The project objectives must focus entirely on technology development, with validation against known standards encouraged.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public or private), nonprofits, for-profit organizations (including small businesses), local governments, state governments, tribal governments, and federal agencies. Individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Period of Performance
The maximum project period is 5 years; however, investigators who are not Early-Stage Investigators generally receive no more than four years of support. The grant may be renewed only once.

Grant Value
Application budgets are not limited but must reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. Projects may request reduced budgets or durations if they have early feasibility data but significant risks due to their early stage.
