Description

The purpose of the WCPP is to provide funding to eligible entities for projects seeking to improve safety of the traveling public by reducing the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVC) and, in doing so, improve habitat connectivity for terrestrial and aquatic species. This NOFO will award approximately $80 million in Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 funding via cost reimbursable grants. DOT may also award any remaining and available funds from previous fiscal years under this opportunity. The actual amount available to be awarded under this notice will be subject to the availability of funds. NOTE: The information under 'Award' on this page requires the specification of a minimum and maximum dollar value for anticipated awards due to Grants.gov system requirements. However, as stated in the NOFO, there are no minimum or maximum award sizes.
Background
The Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program (WCPP) is initiated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to enhance public safety by reducing wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs) and improving habitat connectivity for terrestrial and aquatic species.

The program aims to allocate approximately $80 million in Fiscal Year 2026 funding via cost-reimbursable grants, with potential additional funds from previous fiscal years, subject to availability.

Grant Details
The WCPP will fund both construction and non-construction projects aimed at mitigating WVCs. Eligible applicants include State Departments of Transportation (State DOT), Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO), local government units, regional transportation authorities, special purpose districts with transportation functions, Indian Tribes, Federal Land Management Agencies (FLMAs), or combinations of these entities.

Projects must demonstrate a non-Federal cost share of 20% unless exceptions apply. At least 60% of funds each fiscal year must be awarded to rural areas. The program emphasizes projects that effectively reduce WVCs and enhance habitat connectivity.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include State DOTs, MPOs, local government units, regional transportation authorities, special purpose districts with transportation functions, Indian Tribes, FLMAs, or groups thereof.

Applicants must provide documentation of consultation with the relevant State highway agency if not a State DOT or FLMA. A non-Federal cost share of 20% is required unless exceptions apply.

Period of Performance
The period of performance for WCPP awards is anticipated to be between 1 and 4 years. Funds must be obligated by September 30, 2029.

Grant Value
Approximately $80 million is available for FY 2026 funding through cost-reimbursable grants. There are no specified minimum or maximum award amounts.

Place of Performance
The geographic locations for project performance will vary based on the applications received from eligible entities across the United States.
