Description

FMPP funds projects that develop, coordinate, and expand direct producer-to-consumer markets to help increase access to and availability of locally and regionally produced agricultural products. The program focuses on:

  • Supporting and promoting domestic direct producer-to-consumer (including direct producer-to-retail, direct producer-to-restaurant, and direct producer-to-institutional marketing) marketing such as farmers markets, roadside stands, agritourism activities, community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs, or online sales;
  • Encouraging the development of value-added agricultural products;
  • Developing marketing strategies for producers of local food and value-added products;
  • Facilitating regional food chain coordination development;
  • Promoting new business opportunities and marketing strategies to reduce on-farm food waste;
  • Responding to changing technology needs in direct producer-to-consumer marketing; and
  • Covering expenses related to costs incurred in obtaining food safety certification and improvements to food safety practices and equipment.
Background
The Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP) aims to support the development, coordination, and expansion of direct producer-to-consumer markets to increase access to locally and regionally produced agricultural products. The program focuses on various activities such as supporting and promoting domestic direct producer-to-consumer marketing, encouraging the development of value-added agricultural products, and facilitating regional food chain coordination development.

Grant Details
Approximately $10.5 million is available to fund applications under this solicitation. Applicants may select from one of four project types: Capacity Building projects range from $50,000 to $250,000, Community Development Training and Technical Assistance projects range from $100,000 to $500,000, Turnkey Marketing and Promotion projects range from $50,000 to $100,000, and Turnkey Recruitment and Training projects range from $50,000 to $100,000. The program encourages applications that benefit smaller farms and ranches, historically underserved producers, or underserved communities.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include agricultural businesses or cooperatives, producer networks or associations, CSA networks or associations, food councils, local governments, nonprofit corporations, public benefit corporations, economic development corporations, regional farmers market authorities, tribal governments. Applicants must be domestic entities owned and operated within the 50 United States or U.S. territories.

Period of Performance
The project duration varies based on the project type selected. Capacity Building projects have a duration of 36 months while Community Development Training and Technical Assistance projects also have a duration of 36 months.
Turnkey Marketing and Promotion projects have a duration of 24 months and Turnkey Recruitment and Training projects also have a duration of 24 months.

Grant Value
$10.5 million is available for funding applications under this solicitation. The funding ranges for different project types are as follows: Capacity Building projects range from $50,000 to $250,000; Community Development Training and Technical Assistance projects range from $100,000 to $500,000; Turnkey Marketing and Promotion projects range from $50,000 to $100,000; Turnkey Recruitment and Training projects range from $50,000 to $100,000.
