Description

First awarded in fiscal year (FY) 2001, Recovery Land Acquisition grants promote State and Federal cooperation in listed species conservation by leveraging funds to acquire specific parcels of land, through fee simple or conservation easement, in support of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS)-approved recovery plans and outlines. The Endangered Species Act (ESA) conveys the importance of recovery plans as a central organizing tool for guiding the recovery process by requiring their development for every listed species.
Background
The Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund: Recovery Land Acquisition Grant Program, first awarded in fiscal year 2001, aims to promote cooperation between State and Federal entities in the conservation of listed species. This program leverages funds to acquire specific parcels of land through fee simple or conservation easement, supporting U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS)-approved recovery plans as mandated by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Recovery plans are essential for guiding the recovery process for every listed species.

Grant Details
The Recovery Land Acquisition grants are intended to facilitate the acquisition of land necessary for the recovery of endangered species. The tasks include identifying suitable parcels of land for acquisition that align with FWS-approved recovery plans. Additionally, it involves coordinating with state and federal agencies to ensure compliance with conservation goals and managing the financial aspects of land acquisition, including leveraging additional funding sources. The grant also requires documentation of how acquired lands will be managed post-acquisition to ensure ongoing conservation efforts.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include state agencies, tribal governments, and non-profit organizations involved in conservation efforts for endangered species. Preference may be given to projects that demonstrate strong partnerships between multiple stakeholders and those that leverage additional funding sources.

Period of Performance
The period of performance for this grant is typically set for a duration that allows sufficient time for land acquisition processes and subsequent management activities. This generally spans several months to years depending on project scope.

Grant Value
The total value of the grant varies based on project needs, with individual awards potentially reaching significant amounts depending on the scale of land acquisition required.

Place of Performance
The geographic locations for grant performance will vary based on identified parcels of land necessary for endangered species recovery. This may include various states across the U.S.
