Description

This is a reissue of the Emerging Global Leader Program (K43) to align with the clinical trials policy.
Background
The Emerging Global Leader Award (K43) is a funding opportunity from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically through the Fogarty International Center (FIC) and other participating institutes. The program aims to support early career research scientists from low- or middle-income countries (LMICs) who hold junior faculty positions at academic or research institutions.

The goal is to provide research support and protected time for these scientists, enabling them to develop independent research careers that address health priorities in their countries. This reissue aligns with NIH's clinical trials policy, focusing on applicants proposing to lead independent clinical trials.

Grant Details
The award provides salary support of up to $100,000 per year for a minimum of 75% effort, along with additional research development support of up to $40,000 per year for expenses related to career development activities and research projects.

The total project period should be a minimum of 3 years and may not exceed 5 years. Eligible applicants must propose a research project relevant to their country's health priorities under the mentorship of both LMIC and U.S. mentors. The program emphasizes the importance of conducting an independent clinical trial, feasibility study, or ancillary clinical trial as part of the research plan.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of an LMIC and hold a junior faculty position at an academic or research institution in an LMIC. Candidates must have at least a master's degree with a research thesis; doctoral training is preferred.

Individuals based in the U.S. are not eligible to apply. The primary mentor must be based at the applicant's institution in the LMIC, while a U.S.-based mentor is also required.

Period of Performance
The period of performance for this grant ranges from 3 to 5 years, with specific milestones and timelines outlined in the application process.

Grant Value
The total value of the grant includes salary support up to $100,000 per year and additional research development funds up to $40,000 per year, contingent upon NIH appropriations and meritorious applications.

Place of Performance
The grant will primarily be performed in low- or middle-income countries as defined by the World Bank.
