Background
The Emergency Medicine Research Career Development Program in Neurological Sciences (EMRCDP-NS) is a national program aimed at supporting mentored research career development for junior emergency medicine faculty at institutions nationwide. The program aims to expand the cadre of emergency medicine investigators trained to conduct research into neurological disorders, utilizing their clinical experience as emergency medicine clinicians. The program seeks to address the relative youth of emergency medicine as a field positioned to lead research programs and the lack of EM clinician-scientists equipped to obtain individual NIH research career development mechanisms.

Grant Details
The EMRCDP-NS will fund the administration and infrastructure of one national EMRCDP-NS for 5 years. It uses the K12 Career Development mechanism and aims to prepare highly skilled EM physician-scientists to develop a successful, independent, well-funded research program, combining it with their clinical career to advance the understanding and treatment of neurological disorders commonly treated in the Emergency Department (ED) setting. The program will provide scholars with mentorship, career development guidance, research experience, and protected time for research necessary to initiate a vigorous, sustainable research program. It will also create a support and mentoring network whereby scholars will have the opportunity to interact with both junior and senior EM researchers, as well as clinician-scientists from other subspecialties. The primary metric by which this program will be evaluated will be the transition of supported scholars to subsequent funding equivalent to an NIH K or R01 award.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions affiliated with a medical school with an Emergency Medicine Department that supports both clinical practice and funded research activities. The sponsoring institution must assure support for the proposed program. Foreign institutions are not eligible to apply. The applicant institution must have a strong and high-quality research program in the area(s) proposed under this NOFO.

Period of Performance
The project period is 5 years.

Grant Value
NINDS intends to commit approximately $2,300,000 in FY 2024 to fund 1 award. Application budgets are not limited but need to reflect the actual needs of the proposed project.
