Description

The 102nd Congress recognized that the USGS and the State Geological Surveys needed a coordinated program to prioritize the geologic mapping requirements of the Nation, and to increase production of these geologic maps. The National Geologic Mapping Act (Public Law 102-285) was signed into law in 1992 and created the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP). The Act has been re-authorized three times since then, most recently by the 111th Congress in 2009 (Public Law 111-11, sec. 11001). The Act recognizes that geologic maps are the primary database for virtually all applied and basic earth-science investigations. To read copies of the original act and the two reauthorizations, visit: http://ncgmp.usgs.gov/about/.
Background
The National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) was created by the National Geologic Mapping Act (Public Law 102-285) in 1992 to prioritize the geologic mapping requirements of the Nation and increase production of geologic maps. The Act has been re-authorized four times since then, most recently by the 116th Congress in 2019. The program aims to determine the geologic framework of the Nation through the systematic development of geologic maps and complementary national databases, apply cost-effective mapping techniques, and develop public awareness of the role and application of geologic-map information.

Grant Details
The Educational Component of the NCGMP, known as EDMAP, aims to train the next generation of geologic mappers by providing funds for undergraduate and graduate students in research projects involving activities relevant to creating geologic maps. The program also encourages novel EDMAP Data Synthesis Project proposals that involve training in skills relevant to data modeling and synthesis needs of state-of-the-art geologic mappers. Proposals must be submitted for a 12-month continuous project effort with a 1:1 Federal/Institution funding match. Funding limits for graduate students are up to $35,000 and for undergraduate students up to $25,000 per year.

Eligibility Requirements
EDMAP is restricted to U.S. Universities with geoscience or related departments or programs. University professors must write and submit the proposals, and graduate and undergraduate students must have received appropriate geoscience or related training prior to beginning the proposed project.
Collaborations between more than one institution are allowed, but all Principal Investigators must share equal responsibility for project completion.
Students may be funded for two consecutive fiscal years or supported by an EDMAP award from two different institutions, degrees, or Principal Investigators.

Period of Performance
Proposals were announced on November 09, 2022, with a closing date for submission on January 10, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. (EST). Each proposal should show a 1:1 Federal/Institution funding match.

Grant Value
Funding requests for Field-Focused Projects are up to $35,000 for each graduate student primary mapper and up to $25,000 for each undergraduate primary mapper per year.
Data Synthesis Projects also have funding levels of $35,000 for graduate students and $25,000 for undergraduate students.

Place of Performance
The proposed study area must be located within the United States and (or) U.S. Territories.

Additional Info
EDMAP is restricted to U.S. Universities with geoscience or related departments or programs (for more information on whether your institution is eligible to submit an EDMAP proposal, contact the EDMAP Program Officer). University professors (including adjunct professors) must write and submit the proposals; the supported student(s) must not write the proposal. EDMAP Cooperative Agreements are intended to fund graduate (Masters and Doctoral) students and upper level (junior and senior) undergraduate students. Graduate and undergraduate students must have received appropriate geoscience or related training prior to the time that they begin the proposed project.
