Description

The PRP EIRA supports research opportunities for investigators in the early stages of their careers, under the guidance of one or two designated Mentor(s). The Early Investigator is considered the Principal Investigator (PI) of the application and must exhibit strong potential for, and commitment to, pursuing a career as an investigator at the forefront of PD research; however, the PI is not required to have previous PD research experience. Applications must include at least one Mentor, appropriate to the proposed research project, who has experience in PD research and mentoring as demonstrated by a record of active funding, recent publications, and successful mentorship.

Background
The Parkinson’s Research Program (PRP) is managed by the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA) under the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC). The program aims to support high-impact Parkinson’s research that alters disease progression, improves disease symptoms, and develops treatments benefiting Service Members, Veterans, and individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

Grant Details
The PRP Early Investigator Research Award supports research opportunities for investigators in the early stages of their careers, under the guidance of one or two designated Mentor(s). The proposed research must be relevant to active-duty Service Members, Veterans, military beneficiaries, and/or the American public. Applications must address at least one of the FY23 PRP Focus Areas, such as biological mechanisms or biomarkers associated with non-pharmacological interventions for PD. The total costs budgeted for the entire period of performance should not exceed $500,000.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include postdoctoral or clinical fellows, instructors, or assistant professors within 10 years of advanced degree training or residency training completion. All organizations, including foreign organizations and government agencies within the United States, are eligible to apply.

Period of Performance
The period of performance for an FY23 PRP Early Investigator Research Award should not exceed September 30, 2024. Awards will be made no later than this date.

Grant Value
$2.5M is expected to fund approximately five Early Investigator Research Award applications. The total appropriations for the PRP from FY22 through FY23 totaled $32 million (M), with the FY23 appropriation being $16M.
