Description

Department of Army:

The Department of Defense (DoD) announces the Fiscal Year 2026 Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP). DURIP is designed to improve the capabilities of accredited United States (U.S.) institutions of higher education to conduct research and to educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense, by providing funds for the acquisition of research equipment or instrumentation. For-profit organizations are not eligible for DURIP funding.

Background
The Department of Defense (DoD) announces the Fiscal Year 2026 Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP). This program aims to enhance the capabilities of accredited U.S. institutions of higher education in conducting research and educating scientists and engineers in areas crucial to national defense. The funding is specifically for the acquisition of research equipment or instrumentation, and for-profit organizations are not eligible for DURIP funding.

Grant Details
DURIP provides funds for the purchase of major equipment or instrumentation costing between $50,000 and $3,000,000 that cannot typically be purchased within the budgets of single-investigator awards. The program seeks proposals from universities to acquire equipment that will enhance research capabilities and support education in disciplines important to DoD missions. Proposals must address how the requested equipment will impact research and education at the institution. Awards will take the form of grants or cooperative agreements, depending on the administering agency. Each agency reserves the right to fund all, some, or none of the proposals received under this NOFO.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include accredited U.S. institutions of higher education with degree-granting programs in science, mathematics, and/or engineering. University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs) may also participate; however, Federally Funded Research and Development Centers are not eligible. There is no limit on the number of proposals an organization can submit, but only one administering agency will fund a proposal if selected.

Period of Performance
The total amount of funding available for grants resulting from this DURIP NOFO is estimated at approximately $34 million for a 12-month period. Awards are expected to be completed within this initial period, with an option for a no-cost extension for up to an additional 12 months with sufficient justification.

Grant Value
The total value of the grant opportunity is approximately $34 million, with individual grant awards typically ranging from $50,000 to $3,000,000. Requests exceeding $3 million may be considered under specific conditions.

Place of Performance
The grant activities will be performed at accredited U.S. institutions of higher education.
