Crop Protection and Pest Management Competitive Grants Program

Background
The Crop Protection and Pest Management (CPPM) program is a competitive grants program established under Section 406 of the Agricultural Research, Extension, and Education Reform Act of 1998. It aims to address high priority issues related to pests and their management using integrated pest management (IPM) approaches at the state, regional, and national levels. The program supports projects that ensure food security and respond effectively to major societal pest management challenges with comprehensive IPM approaches that are economically viable, ecologically prudent, and safe for human health.

Grant Details
NIFA requests applications for the CPPM program for fiscal year (FY) 2022 to address critical state, regional and national integrated pest management (IPM) needs. The program supports projects that address these challenges with IPM approaches developed by coordinated state, regional, and national research, and extension efforts. In FY 2022, NIFA will only accept competitive applications for funding in the Applied Research and Development Program (ARDP) and the Regional Coordination Program (RCP) areas of the CPPM program. The anticipated amount available for new CPPM grants competed in FY 2022 is approximately $8.15 million. Of this amount, approximately $4.0 million will be used to fund ARDP awards and approximately $4.15 million to fund RCP awards.

Eligibility Requirements
The purpose of CPPM awards is to enhance the development, adoption, and implementation of innovative, ecologically based, and sustainable IPM technologies, tactics and strategies that address regional and/or national IPM priorities. The program supports research to develop new IPM approaches, extension to disseminate IPM knowledge and improve adoption of IPM practices, and coordination of IPM activities at the regional and national levels to increase the adoption and implementation of IPM practices on a broad scale.

Period of Performance
The grant duration for ARDP projects is 24-36 months with an anticipated number of awards between 15-16. The maximum award amount is approximately $200,000 or $325,000 depending on the project type.

For RCP projects, the grant duration is approximately 48 months with an anticipated number of awards around 4. The maximum RCP award amount is approximately $1,000,000 per year.

Grant Value
$8.15 million is anticipated to be available for new CPPM grants competed in FY 2022.

Approximately $4.0 million will be used to fund ARDP awards while approximately $4.15 million will be used to fund RCP awards.
