BRAIN Initiative: Data Archives for the BRAIN Initiative (R24 Clinical Trial Optional)

ID: RFA-MH-25-110 • Type: Posted

Description

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) solicits applications to develop web-accessible data archives to capture, store, and curate data related to BRAIN Initiative activities. The data archives will work with the research community to incorporate tools that allow users to analyze and visualize the data, but the creation of such tools is not part of this NOFO. The data archives will use appropriate standards to describe the data, but the creation of such standards is not part of this NOFO. A goal of this program is to advance research by creating a community resource data archive with appropriate standards and summary information that is broadly available and accessible to the research community for furthering research.
Background
The BRAIN Initiative, launched in 2014, aims to accelerate the development and application of innovative neurotechnologies to produce a new dynamic picture of the brain. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is one of several federal agencies involved in the BRAIN Initiative, guided by strategic plans such as 'BRAIN 2025: A Scientific Vision' and 'The BRAIN Initiative 2.0: From Cells to Circuits, Toward Cures'. The initiative aims to create a community resource data archive with appropriate standards and summary information that is broadly available and accessible to the research community for furthering research.

Grant Details
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) solicits applications to develop web-accessible data archives to capture, store, and curate data related to the BRAIN Initiative activities. The data archives will work with the research community to incorporate software tools that allow users to analyze and visualize the data, using appropriate standards to describe the data.

The purpose is to provide support for the creation and management of more than one data archive to hold data relevant to the BRAIN Initiative-funded projects and relevant data from other research projects. Each data archive should plan for a help desk to work with those who are trying to upload data. Data submission pipelines that originate with the data collection instrument in the depositor’s laboratory would be ideal but are not required.

The data archive will develop a data submission pipeline ensuring appropriate quality control standards for laboratories trying to upload data.

Eligibility Requirements
All organizations administering an eligible parent award may apply for a supplement under this NOFO. Eligible organizations include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, local governments, state governments, federal government agencies, U.S. territories or possessions, foreign organizations, and others as specified in the NIH Grants Policy Statement.

Period of Performance
The maximum project period is 5 years.

Grant Value
The NIH intends to commit an estimated total of $4 million to fund 3-4 awards at each receipt date. It is expected that costs will be substantially higher after the first year of these awards.
