Advancing Genomic Medicine Research (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)

Background
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is issuing a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) aimed at advancing genomic medicine research. This initiative seeks to stimulate innovation and enhance understanding of how genomic information and technologies can be effectively implemented and shared in clinical care, particularly for populations experiencing health disparities, including racial or ethnic minorities, individuals with lower socioeconomic status, underserved rural communities, and sexual and gender minority groups.

Grant Details
This NOFO invites proposals that focus on the implementation of genomic medicine in clinical settings. Key areas of research include:

1) Implementing genomic medicine: Projects should explore whether genomic information improves clinical care and health outcomes, identify barriers to implementation, and develop frameworks for studying genomic medicine in various settings.

2) Facilitating analysis of clinical genomic data: Proposals may involve creating tools for efficient clinical annotation and interpretation of genomic variants or integrating diverse data types to improve predictive value.

3) Improving access to genomic data: Research should assess how genomic data integration influences healthcare providers and enhance the portability of such data across systems.

4) NCI areas of interest include evaluating cancer genomic data implementation in underserved populations and assessing communication regarding genomic test results. All applications must demonstrate broad applicability and transformative potential in the field of genomic medicine.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public or private), nonprofits, for-profit organizations (including small businesses), local/state governments, tribal governments, federal agencies, and other organizations. Special encouragement is given to institutions serving underrepresented populations such as Hispanic-serving institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Individuals from diverse backgrounds are also encouraged to apply.

Period of Performance
The maximum project period is five years. The earliest start date for funded projects is February 11, 2025.

Grant Value
NHGRI intends to fund approximately three awards totaling $2.4 million for fiscal year 2024, with individual application budgets limited to $500K direct costs per year.

The specific geographic locations where the grant will be performed are expected to encompass various clinical settings where health disparities exist.
