Posted: Dec. 20, 2024, 12:00 a.m. EST
The purpose of the AMF program is to expand the number of fellows at accredited addiction medicine and addiction psychiatry fellowship programs trained as addiction medicine specialists. These fellows will practice in medically underserved, community-based settings that integrate primary care with mental health disorder and substance use disorder (SUD) prevention and treatment services. The fellowship must include training in prevention and treatment services in medically underserved community-based settings, including in rural areas, that have limited or no access to SUD prevention or treatment. The AMF program trains both addiction medicine and addiction psychiatry fellows.

Background
The Addiction Medicine Fellowship (AMF) program, administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) under the Bureau of Health Workforce, aims to expand the number of fellows trained as addiction medicine specialists.

The program is designed to address the high rates of substance use disorders (SUD) in the United States, where over 48 million individuals aged 12 and older are affected. The goal is to train fellows who will provide integrated care in medically underserved community-based settings, particularly in rural areas with limited access to SUD prevention and treatment services.

Grant Details
The AMF program supports training for both addiction medicine and addiction psychiatry fellows. Key tasks include:
1) Increasing the number of fellows trained to practice in medically underserved areas;
2) Establishing partnerships with clinical rotation sites that integrate primary care with mental health and SUD services;
3) Enhancing fellows' knowledge to assist patients with referrals related to their clinical needs;
4) Reducing stigma associated with SUD through education and exposure for medical residents;
5) Providing training tracks that include virtual and in-person rotations focused on community-based settings;
6) Ensuring all participants complete at least one rural clinical rotation within six months of the program's start date.
