Special Announcement
Industry Day 2020
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District would like to invite the Dredging and
Earthwork Industry Contractors to Industry Day 2020 for the Craney Island Sand Reclamation
Project located in Portsmouth, Virginia. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk
District is seeking qualified and experienced firms capable of performing dredging and
earthwork for this project. Work includes:
1. No permits will be needed on the Government furnished site, Craney Island
Dredge Material Management Area (CIDMMA).
2. Base on the ingress and egress areas designated on the drawings the Contractor
shall plan to mob/de-mob accordingly.
3. Reclamation dredging includes a hydraulic cutter-head dredge capable of being
mobilized and launched within the North Cell of the Craney Island Dredged Material
Management Area (CIDMMA). Placement of dredge material shall be discharged
over land and behind a Contractor constructed containment dike, as detailed in the
plans, to allow for natural sorting of the material.
4. Water pumping will be required to provide adequate draft of the dredging vessel and
hydraulic transport of dredge material to the placement location.
5. Acceptance surveys shall be performed by the Contractor biweekly according to QA
standards, as specified in the plans and specifications. All acceptance surveys shall be
validated by the Government prior to acceptance of work and payment.
6. The Contractor shall build an earthen containment dike as defined on the plans and
specs. It will act as an earthen barrier between the placement site and the dredging
area.
7. The containment dike will be located in the area defined by the plans and
specifications. It will act as an earthen barrier between the placement site and the
dredging area. This is to prevent any water or material from the placement site
returning to the dredging area, and force the suspended fines within the transport water
to migrate towards the spillboxes to the west.
8. The Contractor shall return access roads to pre-construction conditions.
Due to COVID19 and the practice of social distancing this Industry Day will be held via webinar
on May 14, 2020 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The Norfolk District, US Army Corps of Engineers
will provide a link to all interested participants.
This event is not a marketing opportunity and will not promote upcoming projects.
The purpose and focus of the event will be to seek Industry input and their questions regarding
best practices for the technical execution of the Craney Island Sand Reclamation Project. The
event will include a presentation by Norfolk District staff members giving current information
regarding scope of work, environmental requirements, safety, dredging, earthwork and material
placement concerns, site access, and work zones. Copies of draft technical documents and plans
