Enclosures:

A. Complete Pre-Repair inspections in accordance with S9243-AW-TRS-011/SHAFT. A Pre-

Repair copy of Enclosure (1)data sheet shall be completed and submitted with the pre-
repair report in place of data sheets C-10 thru C16, C18 thru C-20, C-22, and C23.

B. Prep for weld repair by machining as necessary up to 8 linear feet (entire shaft

circumference) as necessary, to include coupling flanges and fillets.

C. NDT all prepped areas prior to welding in accordance with NAVSEA Tech. Pub. S9074-AR-

GIB-010/278 and/or NAVSEA Tech. Pub. T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 as required by MIL-
STD-2191.

D. Weld repair all prepped areas in accordance with NAVSEA Tech. Pub. S9074-AQ-
GIB-010/248 as required by MIL-STD-2191 up to 1 pass of 8 linear feet (entire shaft
circumference) and up to an additional 4 linear feet (entire shaft circumference) of
multilayer passes.

E. NDT weld repair areas, in accordance with NAVSEA Tech. Pub. S9074-AR-GIB-010/278

and/or NAVSEA Tech. Pub. T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 as required by MIL-STD-2191. Additional
NDT will be required for multiple weld passes.
Stress relieve all welded areas in accordance with MIL-STD-2191.
G. Recheck concentricity after stress relieving; straighten if necessary in accordance with

H. Final machine welded areas to specifications in accordance with NAVSEA Dwg. No.

MIL-STD-2191.

I. Machine/handwork as necessary not to exceed 32 man-hours and $500 in material to
remove defects on other shaft surfaces in accordance with S9243-AW-TRS-011/SHAFT.
Inspect shaft as required by S9243-AW-TRS-011/SHAFT prior to sleeve installation including
MT, UT, hardness readings, dimensional, and concentricity.

K. Purchase sleeves and backing strips. Ensure sleeves are stress relieved and satisfactory RT
is performed and approved by the local DCMA QAR at sleeve manufacturer. Hydrostatic
testing of the shaft sleeves per General Note 12 of NAVSEA Drawing 243-5864870 Rev. F is
not required.

L. Prep machine sleeves and inspect prior to and during installation per Enclosure (3),

instead of S9243-AW-TRS-011/SHAFT Appendix E.
Install sleeves and weld in place in accordance with Enclosure (3) including the use of
strain gages to monitor stress during welding.

N. Final machine sleeves in accordance with NAVSEA Dwg. No. 243-5864870 Rev. F and

inspect including dimensions, concentricity and PT. Enclosure (3) shall be completed and
submitted in its entirety with the final repair report.

O. Skim cut the FWD and AFT flange vertical mating and non-mating faces within tolerances
and surface finishes to remove defects maintaining tolerance in way of aligning spigot fits
and counter bores.

Repair Statement of Work (SOW)

P. Shot peen FWD and AFT flange fillet if weld repaired – or –if fillet temperature exceeds
475 degrees F during weld repair and subsequent stress relief of adjacent areas – or – if
there is no evidence of prior shot peen. Peening shall be in accordance with MIL-S-
13165C and/or MIL-R-81841. When peening is conducted in accordance with MIL-S-
13165C, the peening gun shall not be manually manipulated, but shall comply with the
requirements stated in Paragraph 3.2.1 of subject document. Peening shot media shall
conform to SAE AMS 2431/1E. The peening intensity shall be 0.012 to 0.016 A with a
nominal shot size of 0.033 inches. The peening shall include the entire curvature of the
fillet and the entire circumference, thereby achieving 100% coverage.

Q. Brush hone the shaft bore as necessary.
R. Manufacture, fit, and install new bore plugs. Bore plugs are to be magnetic particle and
ultrasonically inspected in accordance with NAVSEA Tech. Pub. T9074-AS-GIB-010/271.
Bore plug shrink fit shall be in accordance with Table 58-F of NAVSEA Dwg. No. 803-
2145807 Rev. C.

S. Provide forged material for coupling bolts, FIND NO. 30007 or 40007. The coupling bolt
material shall be provided as cylindrical forged bars manufactured from material
conforming to MIL-S-24093, Class C, Type I or II. Ultrasonic testing (UT) is required. A total
of 30 cylindrical forgings shall be provided in the rough machined condition with
dimensions of 4-5/8” on the diameter and at a length of 15-3/4” each. A material
certification report for the forged billets shall be provided, verifying all chemical and
mechanical properties have been checked as well as all material testing performed in
accordance with the requirements of MIL-S-24093, Class C, Type I or II and compliance
achieved accordingly.

T. Provide forged material for coupling nuts, FIND NO. 30008 or 40008. The coupling nut

material shall be manufactured from material conforming to MIL-S-24093, Class E, Type I
or II. Ultrasonic testing (UT) is required. A total of 6 cylindrical forgings shall be provided in
the rough machined condition with dimensions of 4-5/8” on the diameter and at a
length of 16” each. A material certification report for the forged billets shall be provided,
verifying all chemical and mechanical properties have been checked as well as all
material testing performed in accordance with the requirements of MIL-S-24093, Class E,
Type I or II and compliance achieved accordingly. After UT inspection, the rough
machined bars to be used for nuts shall also have a 1” bore drilled completely through
the center axis of the bar.

U. Upon completion of repairs, but prior to applying the covering, the shaft magnetism level

shall be checked. If shaft magnetism level exceeds 7 gauss, the shaft must be
demagnetized to 7 gauss maximum.
NOTE: If the shafting was previously demagnetized following a post-repair MT inspection,
the above magnetism check does not need to be performed.

V. Apply the five-component covering system per MIL-STD-2199 Revision B dated 28 January

2020.

W. Die stamp FWD end of shaft to note NSN, UT inspection, stress relieve temperature, and

shot peening after repairs and inspection.

X. Final inspect for customer acceptance per S9243-AW-TRS-011/SHAFT. A separate Post-

Repair copy of Enclosure (1) and (2) data sheets shall be completed and submitted with

the final repair report in place of C-28 thru C30, C-32 thru C-35, C37 thru C-40, and C42
thru C-44.

Y. Package and Preserve in accordance with MIL-DTL-2845E and International Standards for

Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) No. 15, "Regulation of Wood Packaging Material in
International Trade."

a. After second coating of initial preservation film has dried, all finished steel areas of
propulsion shaft not covered with either GRP or paint, (i.e. bolt holes, counter
bores, bore plugs, and shafting flange mating faces) shall be wrapped and/or
protected with an overlapping, by 1/3rd tape width, full coverage layer of
Petrolatum Impregnated Tape. This will occur prior to installation of the remaining
packaging material. There shall be two full wraps. Petrolateum impregnated tape
shall be wrapped around the entire circumference of the shaft sleeve end or
painted surface and beyond the beginning of the shaft sleeve or painted area
for a distance of not less than 3”. Ensure that the Petrolateum Impregnated Tape
continues just inside the shaft bores, approximately one inch.

b. Petrolatum Impregnated Tape shall meet the requirements of ANSI/AWWA C217
and shall be applied in accordance with manufacturer’s requirements and
section 4 of NACE Standard RP0375-2006 Item No. 21013.

Z. After second layer of Petrolateum Impregnated Tape, creped brown barrier paper shall

be applied to the shaft flange mating face accompanied by wood disk.

AA. Upon approval of all CDRLs, shaft repair vendor shall arrange for transportation via a MIL-
DTL-2845E compliant trailer (including required permits) to the closest of the following two
locations:

*NOTE: While skim cutting/hand working the shaft body between the FWD and AFT sleeve areas,
remove the minimum amount of metal required to clear/blend existing defects while
maintaining design diameter.
