PERFORMANCE WORK STATEMENT (PWS)

Additive Manufacturing of Ship Models

DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES/INTRODUCTION: The contractor shall manufacture a ship model hull using LSAM (Large-Scale Additive Manufacturing) technology. Contractor should demonstrate the use and capability for VLP (Vertical Layer Printing) and hybrid additive printing/subtractive milling practices and techniques.

BACKGROUND: Model-scale ship hulls are hydrodynamically tested at NSWCCD (Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division) to assess the performance of a ship at scale. NSWCCD is searching for alternative methods of model manufacturing to save on cost and time for delivery. This PWS outlines the requirements for a ship model hull to be built which will be tested in a towing tank and verified against previous model data for validation.

OBJECTIVE: The contractor shall perform all required actions listed herein.

Additive Manufacturing of Ship Hull Model

The Contractor shall manufacture the full ship model using LSAM technology in accordance with technical specifications provided by the Sponsor, including any changes agreed to in prior tasks. This includes all printing, joining, machining, and outfit necessary to ensure stability of the part for shipping.

The Contractor shall demonstrate the use and capability of VLP and subtractive milling practices in addition to additive manufacturing of the full ship model hull.

Ship model hull shall be manufactured using an appropriate material selection. Recommended ABS 20% CF (Carbon Fiber) Fill, as specified in attached model drawing, however similar appropriate and viable materials may be used.

Ship model hull must be able to withstand extended immersion in freshwater (approx. 60 °F), without deforming, warping, leaking, corroding, or sustaining other irreversible damages.

Manufacturing of Model Support Cradle

The Contractor shall manufacture a model support cradle in accordance with technical specifications provided by the Sponsor. This includes all printing, joining, machining, and outfit necessary to ensure stability of the part for shipping.

Model cradle must be moveable on four properly sized caster wheels and capable of supporting the weight of the model including NSWC-installed equipment, which is approximately 1,500 lbs.

Model cradle may be manufactured through any appropriate means. The chosen material will ideally be able to withstand extended immersion in freshwater (approx. 60 °F) without warping, corroding, or sustaining other irreversible damages, though this requirement can be relaxed to minimize cost.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Ship model hull must be manufactured using LSAM technology.
