Government Description
Whittier narrows dam is owned by the federal government and operated and maintained by the USACE Los Angeles district (SPL) and is 11 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The whittier narrows Dam Safety Modification Project (DSMP) involves construction to address internal erosion in the foundation and overtopping during extreme floods, including measures along the downstream toe, hardening the crest and downstream slope, raising two roads and adjoining embankments, and constructing concrete parapet walls. The project includes construction of a new reinforced concrete labyrinth control structure, composite embankment connections with embedded Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) monoliths, new reinforced concrete chute slabs anchored to foundation rock, a new underdrain system for the chute, and new reinforced concrete cantilever spillway chute walls. Multiple utilities and other non-federal facilities will be impacted, closed, or relocated as a result of the modification work.
